You've applied for 100 jobs and .... crickets. Ugh!

Two things are probably happening in your search to move up market, get promoted, or land a job after being in transition for weeks or months. You aren't offered the opportunity to interview. You've applied for dozens of jobs and you hear nothing. Crickets. You are 'one and out'. After the first interview or phone screen you follow up with the 'thank you' note/email but you never hear back. Crickets. In fairness, this is a tough process for both parties involved. The employer will spend $5,000 or more to hire the successful candidate (that's if there isn't a recruiter involved, then it goes up 3-4x). For every 100 applications they receive, they might find 1 or 2 candidates that are viable f

Relearning Do. Can. Will.

"Jump, and you will find out how to unfold your wings as you fall." What happened to us? We were fearless in our careers. Then we learned ..... Don't. Can't. Won't. Most of us handcuff ourselves in two ways as we get further into our careers. We have learned to become risk adverse in both. One way we are painfully aware about and the other, maybe not so much. 1. We lose control because we get a taste of success, affluence, and we begin to live beyond our means. This completely changes and the "risk/ reward" equation. Funny, the larger the mortgage, car payment, or tuition bills, the more risk adverse we get. 2. We start to create frames and artificial boundaries for ourselves. When having pe

Dream Big + Effort = Unparalleled Results

“I like to just think of myself as a normal person who just has a passion, has a goal and a dream and goes out and does it ....... I can’t remember the last day I didn’t train.” Michael Phelps Most of us have big dreams but we never act on them or we give up too easily. Some put a lot of effort towards being the best but don't dream or reach beyond their comfort zone. Many are most comfortable following and staying within the herd. There is however a very special place that only a few ever reach where their efforts are commensurate with their dreams. Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history for a reason. The next closest has 14 Gold Medals LESS than he won. Big dreams + incredible ef

"One person can make a difference, and everyone should try"

When I spend time with young multimedia talents, business executives, sales leaders, or anyone that depends upon public speaking, we will reach a point in our curriculum on connecting with an audience or a client. Every story told creates a movie in the head of our listeners. Our goal as a storyteller is to make sure we are all watching the same movie. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was one of history's greatest orators because not only did he understand the importance of connecting with his audience and create that movie, he knew how to inspire us. He knew that his ability to connect, to weave thoughts into an inspirational story was key to changing destiny. He knew: Our Thoughts lead to Action,

Career Reinvention: You vs the World

Your reputation is like a shadow and sometimes course correction is necessary to adjust the shade your reputation casts. Unfortunately, this change is evolutionary, it happens slowly. It can feel like it's you against the world forever. It couldn't be more true than after you've had some type of highly visible (and probably well documented) faux pas in social media, on live television, or in the office during an important event or large meeting. Sometimes your career stalls because that position or promotion you were promised never happens. It's even more difficult to change your course and reputation when you've done nothing catastrophic other than being guilty of spending too much time in
