Your Career: The Movie

There is a Chinese proverb that basically says "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago". Act now, don't wait for something that may never happen, or at a minimum, it happens too late. Additionally, you aren't going back to change the past, the best time to make changes are as early in the process as possible so you can leverage the benefits earlier and longer.

Your career is like this View-Master film strip. When we put the frames together sequentially, you have a movie. Just like the lever of the View-Master, you control the movie including the speed at which you advance the frames and even more importantly, which movie you are going to watch. How aptly named right? YOU are the Master of the View.

It's time to push the lever of the View-Master ......

Below are some tips, actually a collection of tips that we can use to best manage the frames of our career movies. From where you start to how to manage career change and your resulting reinvention.

Here are the 5 things you need to be focused on first:

Reason for Leaving/Change Statement:

Reason for Leaving Statement has three components:

  1. Who I am, skills, competencies

  2. What I’ve done, accomplished, results

  3. Where I’m going


I've spent the last 6 years writing, producing, and delivering on-camera content for a number of regional and national media outlets. What I discovered during this time is that my best, and most enjoyable, work has come when I've delivered my own authentic content. The next step in my career is to use the skills I've developed in media and leverage my life experiences both personally and professionally in a new organization. I'm in the process of networking and building out my plans to that.

More Reason for Leaving/Change Statements:

“After a very rewarding career at X, Y and Z, I found it time to leave to pursue my interests in other digital media formats and industries. My experience in the production and distribution of video content could be an extremely important component of any organization’s omni-channel strategy. I’m ready to pursue these new opportunities in both private and public companies and apply my vast knowledge and domain expertise to take an organization to the next level. Although I’m engage in a freelance practice, I could be available almost immediately for the right opportunity”

“As you may know (or “as we discussed”), I’m a seasoned communications and media pro that has delivered best in class content in a number of major US markets the past decade (avoid # of years specifically). I’m ready to take my ability to build brands as a spokesperson or ambassador to the next level in either the private or non-profit sectors. I’m looking for a mid to senior level position developing and managing an organization’s persona across all multimedia formats. My plan would be to make this transition in late 2016 or early 2017 for the right opportunity”

Update Your Resume, LinkedIn, Reel:

These three pieces need to be updated and quickly. The first thing you'll hear after delivering your Reason for Leaving Statement is "hey, send me your resume".

There are best practices for developing all three of these elements and I recommend finding professional help with all three. In terms of your LinkedIn profile, go ahead, creep on mine. It is the collaboration of my experience, personality, and review from a friend who is a social media SME when it comes to LinkedIn. What was MY role in this?

Look, none of us are perfect and we certainly aren't perfect fits with every role we've had, or going to have, in our career. You absolutely need to be honest with yourself and objective. What role did you play in this change? You didn't adapt, change, compromise? Your principles didn't allow you to comply and carry out assignments or projects?

When you identify your role in this change and you take accountability, it's then you can make course correction and ensure you don't find yourself in the!

We don't get many opportunities to reinvent ourselves and the best opportunity comes when you accept a new role within your own organization or a brand new role with a new/different company.
